A Box at the Théâtre des Italiens

The real show is the audience: a woman paints women at the theatre. In a box at the Théâtre des Italiens, elegant women watch as much as they are watched. A large Salon-scale canvas (97.7 × 130 cm, Musée d'Orsay) shown at the 1879 Salon, turning the male gaze back into a woman painter's gaze.
