This document outlines the intellectual property, curatorial independence, and archival standards applicable across the Trace Museum digital collections.

01

Platform Publisher

TRACE MUSEUM is an independent curatorial, educational, and archival initiative dedicated to open study, slow observation, and ultra-high-resolution digital preservation of world artworks belonging to the universal public domain.

Editorial & Curatorial Contact: [email protected]
Nature of Service: Non-commercial digital study museum and open scholarly resource. Access to all exhibition galleries and curatorial notices is entirely open, direct, and free of charge.

02

Publication Director & Infrastructure Hosting

Publication Director: Curatorial Management of Trace Museum ([email protected]).

Web Infrastructure Hosting: The tracemuseum.com platform is served over a secure, globally distributed static delivery network operated by Cloudflare Pages (Cloudflare, Inc. — 101 Townsend St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA — www.cloudflare.com ↗) and GitHub Pages (GitHub, Inc. — 88 Colin P. Kelly Jr. Street, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA — www.github.com ↗).

03

Artwork Status & Public Domain Reproductions

All historical artworks presented across Trace Museum belong to the universal public domain: their creators passed away more than 70 years ago (under French and EU intellectual property laws, or under the 95-year rule post-publication in the United States) or originate from medieval and ancient cultural heritage.

No Copyright over Faithful 2D Reproductions:
• European Union: In strict compliance with Article 14 of Directive (EU) 2019/790 on copyright in the Digital Single Market: "when the term of protection of a work of visual art has expired, material resulting from an act of reproduction of that work is not subject to copyright or related rights".
• United States: Pursuant to landmark jurisprudence Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp. (36 F. Supp. 2d 191, S.D.N.Y. 1999), slavish two-dimensional photographic reproductions of public domain paintings lack original creativity and cannot generate an independent copyright.

Attribution & Archive Sourcing: Every curatorial notice thoroughly documents the open digital repository (Wikimedia Commons, museum Open Access archives), the verified physical holding institution, and the specific reproduction license (CC0 1.0 Universal, Public Domain Mark 1.0, CC BY 4.0, or CC BY-SA 4.0 with mandatory photo credits).

04

Referenced Institutions & Curatorial Independence

Trace Museum operates as a strictly autonomous cultural and digital initiative. Unless explicitly stated in a contractual agreement, there exists no formal partnership, commercial sponsorship, official endorsement, or legal affiliation between Trace Museum and the museums, public trusts, or national collections cited across our curatorial entries.

Names of custodial institutions (e.g., Musée d'Orsay, National Gallery of Art, Bayeux Tapestry Museum...) are cited exclusively for identification, archival provenance, and accurate historical attribution of the physical masterworks.

05

External Store & Fine Art Prints

The "Prints" section connects visitors with specialized external print-on-demand ateliers (notably Fine Art America).

Terms and conditions of sale, payment processing, museum-grade production, bespoke archival framing, international fulfillment, returns, and applicable data handling remain the sole contractual responsibility of the partner fulfillment service. Trace Museum processes no commercial transactions directly on this viewing portal.

06

Privacy, Personal Data & Zero Tracking

Trace Museum is engineered as a 100% static web architecture prioritizing visitor privacy. The site does not maintain visitor accounts, collects no identifiable personal data, sets no advertising or profiling cookies, and shares no telemetry with third-party advertising exchanges.

Aggregate visitor metrics are recorded via an EU-hosted Umami Analytics instance compliant with GDPR and CNIL guidelines. This service functions without cookies, anonymizes IP addresses, and performs no cross-site profiling.

07

Accuracy of Information & Scholarly Dialogue

Trace Museum devotes utmost care to editorial accuracy, curatorial attribution, technical dimensions, and historical dating. Nonetheless, the archive cannot warrant total immunity from emerging art historical consensus or typographical lapses.

Scholars and visitors noticing discrepancies or wishing to suggest archival additions are warmly encouraged to write to our curatorial team at [email protected].
