The Saint-Lazare Station

Speed painted: smoke as the measure of the century. Under the station roof, steam blurs the locomotives and dissolves the architecture (1877, 75 × 105 cm, Musée d'Orsay, Caillebotte bequest 1896). The railway — the acceleration of the 19th century — as an open-air subject: modern time, caught on the fly.
