Public domainPortrait of Eva Gonzalès (by Manet)
The master paints his only pupil: the portrait that made a reputation. In 1870 Manet shows his young pupil's portrait at the Salon ('Mlle E. G.'), shown painting in his studio. A monumental canvas (191.1 × 133.4 cm, National Gallery, London, Hugh Lane Bequest 1917) lent to the Petit Palais: the master-pupil encounter at the heart of the show.
This work was shown in the Petit Palais retrospective 'Eva Gonzalès. Parcours d'une artiste libre' (15 September 2026 – 24 January 2027).
