Nanny and Child

Motherhood without sentimentality: childhood painted from inside. A nanny holds a child in domestic intimacy caught live (1877–1878, 65 × 81.4 cm, National Gallery of Art, Washington). The heart of Gonzalès's work: her close circle, without posing or pathos.

This work was shown in the Petit Palais retrospective 'Eva Gonzalès. Parcours d'une artiste libre' (15 September 2026 – 24 January 2027).
